January 1, 2018, American Express and Hilton will begin an exclusive credit card agreement. That means only Amex Hilton cards will continue to exist and the Citi Hilton cards will not. Here’s the press release if you want to read more about it.

Citi and American Express both issue Hilton co-branded credit cards.

Citi’s got the…

  • Hilton Honors Visa Signature card
  • Hilton Honors Reserve card

…and Amex has got the

  • Hilton Honors card
  • Hilton Honors Surpass card.

Or at least Citi WAS issuing Hilton co-branded credit cards. The applications for both the Visa Signature and the Reserve card have recently disappeared from Citi’s website. Does this mean the cards are done for good, or is it just a fluke? I’m not sure, but it’s probably not a fluke since Citi and Hilton are ending their partnership.

if you want to nab Citi’s Hilton Honors Visa Signature card or the Hilton Honors Reserve card, then you still have a chance. Doctor of Credit has posted a few working links, two offers for the Visa Signature card and one for the Reserve card. I’ve included the application links below and summarized their offers beneath each.

Hilton Honors Visa Signature card

  • Earn 50,000 Hilton HHonors Bonus Points after making $1,000 in purchases within the first four months of account opening
  • Earn 6 HHonors Bonus Points for each $1 spent at any participating hotel within the Hilton Portfolio
  • Earn 3 HHonors Bonus Points for each $1 spent on purchases at supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations
  • Earn 2 HHonors Bonus Points for each $1 spent on all other purchases.
  • Enjoy the benefits of HHonors Silver status as long as you are a cardmember (biggest benefit of elite status is getting the fifth night free on award stays)
  • No annual fee, does have foreign transaction fees
  • Eligibility: Bonus not available if you have opened or closed any Citi®Hilton HonorsTM card in the past 24 months (i.e. this card or the Reserve card)

Hilton Honors Visa Signature card

  • Earn 40,000 Hilton HHonors Bonus Points after making $1,000 in purchases within the first four months of account opening
  • Eligibility: No 24 month language is present, so assumedly even if you’ve had a Citi Hilton product opened or closed in the last 24 months you should still be eligible for the bonus.
  • Rest of the offer is the same as listed above
The Hilton Pyramids Golf Resort in Giza has a good point price per night

  • Earn 10 HHonors Bonus Points per $1 spent on hotel stays within the Hilton Portfolio
  • Earn 5 HHonors Bonus Points per $1 spent on airline and car rental purchases
  • Earn 3 HHonors Bonus Points per $1 spent on all other eligible purchases

  • No foreign transaction fees
Conrad New York
Conrad New York, a good (read:expensive) Hilton location for redeeming Free Weekend Night Certificates

Can I get both?

Yes, but only if you apply for the Reserve first and then the Visa Signature without the 24-month language after (or else you’ll be tripped up by the Citi sign up bonus rule on the Reserve because it does have 24-month language).

You can be approved for no more than one Citi card in an eight day period. So if you decide you want both, get them on days 1 and 9.

Also note that you can be approved for no more than two Citi cards in a 65 day period. So if you end up wanting a third Citi card of any kind, wait until day 66.

I only want one, but I’m not sure which.

If you find yourself in this boat, I suggest you read There are Two Opposite Strategies to Maximize Hilton (Hilton Reserve vs. Points).

That being said, since the bonus offer for the Visa Signature is pretty low, I’d probably opt for the Reserve card. Two nights at any Hilton is probably worth a lot more than 40 or 50k Hilton points, but it depends on your travel plans.

I already have a Citi Hilton card. What’s going to happen to it?

View from the Wing reported that Citi is planning to product change Hilton cardholders to a different Citi product, but then amended the post later to say that no final decision has been made. You’ll have to wait and see.

Bottom Line

At the beginning of this month we learned that American Express would enter into an exclusive credit card agreement come 2018, which meant the eventual end of Citi’s credit cards that are co-branded with Hilton.

Applications for Citi’s Hilton cards, the Visa Signature (with a points bonus) and the Reserve card (with Free Weekend Night Certificates bonus), have disappeared from Citi’s website. It looks like these cards are going away for good.

If you want one or both, Doctor of Credit has found links that still work, at least for the moment (YMMV).

We do get commissions when you sign up for some cards, but not from the links above. We just want you to be aware of the best deals.
