The Citi ThankYou® Premier Card changed its 3x categories to gas and travel on April 19. I covered just how broad those categories are in this post at the time.

Gas and travel purchases that earn 3 ThankYou Points per dollar include:

  • airlines
  • hotels
  • car rental agencies
  • travel agencies
  • gas stations
  • commuter transportation
  • taxi/limousines
  • passenger railways
  • cruise lines
  • bridge and road tolls
  • parking lots/garages
  • campgrounds and trailer parks
  • time shares
  • bus lines
  • motor home/RV Rental and boat rentals

At the time of the change, I hoped that Uber fell into the taxi/limousines category. I can now confirm that it does.

Here are a series of Uber charges from my recent time in Bogota (that oddly list the Merchant Country as Netherlands.)

Screen Shot 2015-05-05 at 11.37.03 AMAll of the charges list the category as “Other Travel TAXICAB/LIMOUSINE,” and I earned 3x on the charges.

Right now the Citi ThankYou® Premier Card offers 40,000 bonus ThankYou Points after spending $3,000 in the first three months. I love ThankYou Points because they can be used like cash toward any flight or transferred to 12 airlines. I challenged myself to spend as much of that $3,000 in 3x and 2x categories. (The 2x categories are dining out and entertainment.) I’ve done pretty well, averaging over 2x on all my spending while unlocking my sign up bonus.
