Yes, this is a repost of Friday, since the Daily Getaways deal today is the same. I bought 50,000 points on Friday, but the packages sold slowly.

Today is the first day of the fourth week of five weeks of discounted travel packages sponsored by the US Travel Association and American Express called Daily Getaways.

Every weekday at 1 PM ET, a discounted travel package or packages will go on sale and will usually sell out in a few minutes. Some of the offers will be awesome; some will be duds. Today’s deal is solid, but not spectacular.

Today’s deal is to buy IHG Rewards Club points in quantities of 15k, 25k, 50k, and 100k points for a discount.

How can you get in on the deal?

All Daily Getaways packages are discounted. And you get an additional 10% off each sale price by paying with an American Express, so that’s a no-brainer, and I’ll always quote prices after the American Express discount.

Today’s deal is on IHG Rewards Club points–the loyalty points of several budget chains including Holiday Inn and Intercontinental.

  • 15,000 IHG Rewards Club Points for $90, 0.6 cents per point
  • 25,000 IHG Rewards Club Points for $150.30, 0.6 cents per point
  • 50,000 IHG Rewards Club Points for $292.50, 0.59 cents per point
  • 100,000 IHG Rewards Club Points for $567, 0.57 cents per point

There are between 1,000 and 2,500 of each package available. You can buy four of each quantity and 16 packages total.

Is buying IHG Rewards Club Points for 0.57 cents a good deal?

Yes, it’s about a 20% discount off the prevailing price of 0.7 cents per point. But I wouldn’t go overboard buying points unless you are reasonably confident you’ll use them quickly.

There are two main uses for the points: regular awards and PointBreaks.

Regular awards cost 10k to 50k points per night, meaning $57 to $285 per night if you purchased the points today, depending on the hotel category.

Check the hotel you want on your dates to see if the retail price is higher or lower than the price you would get if you purchased the points today for an award night.

The better use of the points is for PointBreaks hotels. PointBreaks are a rotating list of hotels from all nine categories that cost 5,000 points for two months only. At today’s point prices, you can get a hotel for $29 if it’s on the PointBreaks list and you buy the points today.

The new PointBreaks list came out today for hotel bookings through August 31. I just booked five nights at PointBreaks hotels, depleting my points stash. I’ll buy 50k more points today to book more PointBreaks nights.

See today’s other post for more info on PointBreaks hotel bookings.

Purchasing the Packages

To maximize your chances of getting in on the deal, I recommend using a site like whattimeisit.com to figure out the official time. This year’s sales have all started on time to the second. Keep refreshing for the best chance.

This is what happens if you try to purchase something where all quantities are already in someone’s cart.

This doesn’t mean the deal is sold out. If someone doesn’t complete his purchase, that quantity will immediately become available for someone else. Keep checking until the dreaded “Sold Out” appears.

I will be by my computer at 1 PM EST / 10 AM PST / 7 AM HST / (2 PM in Buenos Aires) to check out how these deals are selling. Do you plan to buy them? Post your successful or failed attempt in the comments, so we can gauge how quick you had to be to snag a deal.
