Delta has put many routes between the US and Mexico on “sale” right now. I say “sale” because Delta doesn’t have a published award chart anymore, but we know from charts maintained by people like us online that the standard lowest level US > Mexico award price is 17,500 Delta miles one way. Right now many routes are only 12,000 SkyMiles roundtrip. That’s 23,000 miles cheaper than usual! Available travel dates span from this month all the way through May of 2019.

Usually Delta publishes these “flash sales” on their website, but this one doesn’t appear to be. I saw some space still available for 12k roundtrip, and some space for 14k. Either way, that’s a lot less than 35k. It will get picked over fast, so act now if you want a cheap trip to Mexico.

Sale Routes

Try any of the following city pairs, picking one American city and a Mexican destination.

US: ATL/BNA/BOS/BWI/FLL/JFK/LAX/MCO/MIA/MSY/ORD/SAN

Mexico: MEX/CUN/CZM/ZIH/SJD/PVR

12k miles roundtrip (or even 14k miles roundtrip) is a massive discount off of the typical 35k price. Always check to see the cash price of the ticket, but in many cases (especially if you value Delta miles less than other miles) this will be a good use of Delta miles. For reference I value Delta miles at 1.25 cents each. Go get some pozole, pictured above, or tacos al pastor, pictured below.

Examples of Award Space

The following calendars are for two passengers in economy on a week long roundtrip, Baltimore (BWI) to Cancucn (CUN).

The next two calendars are for two passengers in economy on a week long roundtrip, New York City (JKF) to Mexico City (MEX).

Blackout Days

Since this isn’t a published “flash sale”, we don’t know what the blackout days. Looks like typical days you’d guess, around holidays and spring break, don’t have much space.

Want More Help Maximizing Your Miles on Domestic Redemptions?

There’s a fine line to walk when it comes to redeeming miles on economy flights within the United States. Many times it’s not worth it. Check out our series on How to Maximize Domestic Award Redemptions to learn how to stretch what rewards you’ve got when flying short distance. All the major point types are covered, which means all the frequent flyer programs most commonly utilized by those that live in the USA are covered.

Bottom Line

If you have a stash of Delta miles, these kind of random/flash sales are exactly what they’re good for. And don’t forget the lime with that tequila!
